Stink Bugs - A Stinky Situation
57
Stink bugs cause massive amounts of damage to crops making them a troublesome pest for farmers. They are so damaging because they eat, they eat a lot, and their not picky eaters. Yet the biggest concern a homeowner has with stinkbugs is keeping them out of you home. The reason why this is so important is their rate of reproduction. Each female stinkbug can lay as many as 100 eggs in a month. In fact, their lives pretty much consist of eating and reproducing. Because of this keeping their population in check and preventing their entry in to homes is very important.
One method that will greatly reduce the likelihood of an infestation is the use of a stink bug trap. Traps will work in a manner similar to fly paper. However, the stink bug trap may also have an enticing smell and produce light to attract stink bugs.
They work through the internal light heating up the trap this causes it radiates a scent that stink bugs just can’t pass up. You shouldn’t worry about this smell because it is so faint you won’t notice its presence. A great benefit of these traps is that they come in both indoor and outdoor models (which are weather resistant). Traps are also very easy to use because all you have to do to install them is hang the trap by its hook.
For the best results you should place the trap in a dark area so that it doesn’t have to compete with other light sources. Additionally it is important that you don’t place traps in an overly hot space because this might melt the adhesive rendering the trap ineffective. Nevertheless warm areas are ideal places for the traps because the bugs are more active in warmer conditions.
An example of these traps is the Strube Stink Bug Trap. These traps use the combination of light heat and glue mentioned above. They work by using their internal light to release a scent that entices stink bugs without bothering humans.
These traps are made to attract several different types of stink bugs, including the hard to control brown marmorated stink bug. Their instillation is simple, you just hang by the attached hook in a place that meets the above listed criteria
When using any bait or trap pest control method it is important to check them regularly. These traps can become filled rather quickly provided that there is a large population nearby. Not only will this prevent others from adhering to the trap but it will also deter them from entering.
