It can be hard to get rid of rats, depending on their shape and size, many homes will see small mice, n some cases you will need to deal with rats.  Baited traps designed to kill mice and rats on the spot, poison bait traps contain a few pellets secured inside which rodents will eat.  Lastly there are live traps, you can use these traps to capture mice alive, they can be either single use (normally you place a bait in the cage to attract the rodents, when it’s triggered the door will shut), or you can use a multi-capture design that will trap many mice in one setting (this trap is cleaver and works very well if you have multiple mice).  There are many companies that sell pest control supplies, spring traps are very good for barns and rafters where mice will run up and along beams.  Normal wood spring traps are excellent in these cases because you can staple them onto beams and rafters, making road blocks for mice. 

Poison bait works unless you’re in an area that will need to dispose of their remains (like a corporate building) this makes poison baits better for outdoor use and in barns where their remains aren’t an issue.  Rodents can also learn how to avoid spring traps and bait traps, this will make them less efficient in the long run.  The very best method of rat control is to use live traps, they will not leave scents of dead rodents on them, they can be used several times, this gives the added benefit of humane removal of pests.

Traps that use poisons should be secured in areas that cannot be easily accessible from pets or children.  Traps that are secured against tampering and is recommended, placing these spring traps and live capture traps, make sure to place them along walls, mice are like many other creatures and will go through a trap than to try to go around them.
